On a dark autumn day at an unnamed time in the past, the narrator rides toward the House of Usher. At first glimpse he finds the decaying house disturbing, but he can't explain exactly why. Despite the gloom this sight inspires in him, the narrator rides on to visit his boyhood friend Roderick Usher.
